These five islands, are some most beautiful, protected landscapes and environments in England, with a permanent population of just over 2,200, which attracts over 100,000 visitors each year.
With the highest home energy use in the UK, imported fossil fuels being up to 50% more expensive than on the mainland, and despite having 280 more hours of sunshine than London, local renewable energy has generated less than 2% of the energy needed on the islands.
But the Smart Energy Islands have bold energy goals, to cut electricity bills by 40%, meet 40% of energy demand through renewables and see 40% of vehicles be low carbon or electric by 2025.
